Artista, docente y curador, Luc Tuymans es uno de los nombres más influyentes de la escena artística internacional. Después de sus experiencias con el video y el cine, a mediados de los ochenta, el artista comenzó a pintar de nuevo, realizando obras que abordaron temas como el Holocausto, los atentados en Oklahoma y en el Congo belga. A partir de fotografías y películas, sus pinturas examinan la memoria cultural con una paleta silenciosa y austera, dotando a las mismas de un significado ambiguo.
Siempre interesado en la irrupción de lo siniestro en la cotidianeidad, para la XIV Bienal de Cuenca Tuymans se embarcó en la realización de este gran mural que parte de una imagen tomada de la serie televisiva estadounidense Twin Peaks, creada por David Lynch y Mark Frost. En este caso, tres hombres descienden por una escalera, mientras sus cuerpos proyectan unas sombras de apariencia fálica al fondo. El fresco hace visible las cualidades atmosféricas, y ese clima de enigma y suspenso propios de su pintura.

Artist, educator, and curator Luc Tuymans is one of the most influential figures on the international art scene. After venturing into video and film, in the mid-eighties Tuymans started painting again, making works that addressed topics like the Holocaust and terrorist attacks in Oklahoma and the Belgian Congo. Based on photographs and films, his ambiguous paintings in austere and muted palette examine cultural memory.
Out of his dogged interest in how the uncanny breaks into daily life, Tuymans produced of a large mural for the XIV Cuenca Biennial. The mural’s image is taken from the television series Twin Peaks, created by David Lynch and Mark Frost; specifically, it shows three men coming down a staircase, their bodies casting phallic shadows in the background. The fresco evidences the qualities of a dark atmosphere, and the sense of mystery and suspense characteristic of Tuymans’s painting.
